Nika Tang Spring/Summer 2014

Nika Tang was born in Guangzhou, China, and grew up east of San Francisco in Berkeley, California. She graduated from Academy of Arts, MFA in Fashion Design. Her designs have been shown in Belgium and France. Nika Tang loves to convey volumes in the designs. She also uses draping and pattern construction to make strong and statement shapes with clean silhouettes. Her latest lineup The Macramé Collection for the upcoming spring and summer employed volumes, textures and movement. Nika Tang took her inspiration from various sources: the stone carvings of realism artist, Kris Kuksi, the designs of Swiss architect Mario Botta, and the sculpture of South Korean artist Byoungho Kim. The shapes of the garments reminded of a half dome and ruffled pieces of a sunfish, and the fabric textures resembled of caviar eggs. Nika Tang played with traditional macramé, modern textile printing, fabrication and tailoring techniques. The key fabrics in the collection were neoprene and sueded silk. It took nine months to bring these ethereal creations to life. Different weights of neoprene fabrics and under-structures were utilized to give a range of movement, draping and volume in the garments. To create the amazing pink macramé piece, it took over 80 hours to make it. Nika Tang engineered bold, sartorial and head-turning looks.
